The throes of winter Such bleak and muddy cold Besets our weary troops ‘Fore an onslaught yet untold And so it has begun Along the Meuse’s eastern banks Enter a fray of boundless carnage Of such destruction and dismay Constant barrage The bodies keep piling anew Second attack Leaves the dead bloated and blue Razor wire Divulging pallid sinews Artillery fire Blistered and broken in two A rain of shell and fire engulfs in an infernal roar And as the twilight came upon us it brought enemy outpour And so we find ourselves Besieged by tides of Allied steel Commence this enemy engagement What twisted mockery is this? A land fecund with the remnants of our dead Rooted by the corpses of those buried alive

Such lust once would be sated by the swansong of your heart Paired with spectral rattle issued by Death’s harp Such lust once would be sated by the cold gaze of your eyes No longer bound by life’s constraints Nor to its earthly lies It’s not enough, the blood now calls for something new I feel a strange new stirring as I watch your skin turn blue I need to make you a part of me We must needs become one A feast devoured so lovingly ‘neath the setting sun An act so unbecoming The world outside won’t understand An act so vile and sickening Performed with doting hand With this act we’ll become one into eternal life A consummation of the flesh Performed with fork and knife In eternal fiery depths, a reservation ironclad From such abomination, no redemption can be had As teeth pierce your bloating corpse, such ghastly fate’s embraced For I’ve made you a part of me, my lust this act did sate An act so vile

Nothing 04:12
Left behind by armored beasts of war The dashed remnants of those who dared traverse The paths offered to tread and tread alone Is this the yield of man’s progress? A trampled distortion of his former self To prosperity we make one step While two alike head towards the grave Left behind by armored beasts of war A fresh banquet for eager soils Left bitter by ruin offered from tread and tread alone How they’ll feast upon this mangled heap of corporal decay Seething, sordid pageantries of maggot-teeming rot It all leads to nothing These absurd clashes of steel And with these armored beasts of woe For nothing our fates are sealed To be supplanted by crossed beams of freshly coated pine Offering future generations the presence of a sadly absent glory Promised to those willing to die for nothing

Surrounded Each side teems with enemy obstruct Such paltry shield this wooded expanse feels As the vast ocean of sky beyond Brings forth tides of shell and steel Survival The anguished cries of wounded men So overwhelmed by the sickly stench of death The turbid smoke of armament pollutes our each and every breath Surrender Such wretched avenue Even faced with such coercion, we’ve no desire to pursue Such a fitting grave this wooded expanse feels As quarter is finally passed on And like an ever flowing stream they near Those tides of shell and steel Tides of shell and steel

Breached 03:38
Skin stretches taut in shivering hope of the parting hook As they guide the fetters led by powers unperceived To set my nerves alight as piercing steel invades each niche and nook Confining chains have set me free in grisly irony This penetration fills the void possessed since my first breath With glee I writhe in a torment to which you would prefer death As my violated flesh was once partition to my being So too has line been breached ‘tween agony and ecstasy Upon my pending final gasp no respite will be wrought With one last wrench, my blood will rain upon your stunned visage A depraved jest of salted tears from which you’ve felt redeemed But what of redemption when you can’t forget what you have seen? This penetration fills the void possessed since my first breath With glee I writhe in a torment to which you would prefer death As my violated flesh is all that’s left of my once fruitful being So too will you be torn ‘tween agony and ecstasy
6.
Be it one last stifled gasp ‘midst bombardment’s hasty graves Or blood-choked dance of death atop the outstretched bayonet I won’t let the Reaper’s sickle pave my lonely path A press upon the trigger will settle his outstanding debt Unimaginable horrors witnessed ‘tween these pits of woe My spirit’s died a thousand deaths My body’s functions just for show I’m but a wraith, a sickly phantom Bereft of my life’s zeal To shed this earthly husk would be no worrisome ordeal I’ve clasped the putrid offal spewed from comrades’ gaping wounds I’ve watched the verve diminish from the eyes of those I’ve killed I need to lead the way along the road towards my tomb I want to die I need to die before more blood is spilled Here I dangle gleefully at the cusp of the abyss The taste of cold blue steel peppered with August’s morning mist Endless void of black preferred to what this day may bring Within this catacomb, I shall abandon everything Catacombs of Entrenchment

Belleau Wood 05:22
And here we hold for now Ordered to dig, stand, fight As flowing fields of grain yield Assault of boundless might As the enemy bursts forth With its piercing steel reserve Night will stow our matched retort Their force be matched to strike the nerve The calming kiss of summer winds As they dance from tree to tree Belies the sight of Belleau Wood Plagued by lost humanity Through waves of boundless charge Six in turn with bullets’ gale The dead, our fees for war’s success The wood is held, to what avail? Through the wheat with bayonets fixed to strike Pierce their flesh with no remorse, go forthright Behold the sight of Belleau Wood The dead grace the ground where we once stood The calming kiss of summer winds As they dance from tree to tree Belies the sight of Belleau Wood Plagued by lost humanity
